Four animal rights activists are facing charges of aggravated defamation over secret filming at pig farms in 2009. The total sum of compensation claims runs to €175,000, according to YLE.

Animal rights activists videotaped conditions at 30 pig farms in various parts of Finland. The footage sparked a public outcry and provoked much debate.

Ten pig farms are demanding compensation for mental suffering and production losses to the tune of €175,000.

Trial proceedings in the case started yesterday, 25 October, at a district court in Salo. The accused deny all charges.
