Decline in Danish pig herd continued in July - AHDB
Breeding pigs down 6.5%; slaughter pigs 8.2%As of the 1 July 2022, the Danish pig population stood at 12.2 million, 7.5% fewer than the same point a year ago, according to Statistics Denmark. This continues the downward trend seen since October 2021, and marks the smallest Danish pig herd since April 2019, wrote AHDB analyst Hannah Clarke in a recent news release.
All categories of pigs saw a decline on the year; the number of breeding pigs shrunk by 6.5%, and the number of slaughter pigs contracted by 8.2%. Prices for finished pigs in Europe have largely moved sideways of late, while high input costs continue to severely challenge profitability.
The EU Commission forecasts EU pig meat production will decline by nearly 5% in 2022, pressured by high input costs, environmental concerns, reduced exports and ASF.
