Poland sees surge in African swine fever outbreaks in 2021

ASF cases in Poland have jumped from 12 cases to 36 cases during the month of July, indicating ASF is on the move in Poland.

In a press statement, Poland's Chief Veterinary Officer announced the discovery of the 36th outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in pigs in 2021, based on the results of laboratory tests obtained on July 28 this year.

ASF outbreak no. 2021/36 (primary outbreak) was designated on July 28, 2021 on a farm where 15 fattening pigs were kept, located in Wodniki, Wąsosz commune, Górowski poviat, Dolnośląskie voivodship and in the area covered by regionalization listed in Annex to Commission Implementing Regulation (CIR) 2021/605.

In the farm where ASF outbreaks were detected, the Veterinary Inspection implemented all procedures related to the eradication of the disease in accordance with EU regulations and the Regulation of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of May 6, 2015 on combating African swine fever.

Earlier in the week (lab tests 26-27 July), four other outbreaks were reported:

  • ASF outbreak no. 2021/32 (primary outbreak) was set on July 26, 2021 on a farm where 9 pigs (8 piglets, 1 sow) were kept, located in Radomno, in the Nowe Miasto Lubawskie commune, Nowe Miasto district, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship , i.e. in the area covered by regionalization listed in the annex to the Commission Implementing Regulation (CIR) 2021/605.
  • ASF outbreak No. 2021/33 (primary outbreak) was designated on July 26, 2021 on the farm where 19 pigs (10 weaners, 7 fatteners, 2 sows) were kept, located in Podole, in the commune of Przecław, Mielec poviat, Podkarpackie Province, i.e. in the area covered by regionalization listed in the annex to the Commission Implementing Regulation (CIR) 2021/605.
  • ASF outbreak no. 2021/34 (primary outbreak) was established on July 26, 2021 on a farm where 12 pigs (10 fatteners, 2 sows) were kept, located in Stary Tomyśl, Nowy Tomyśl commune, Nowy Tomyśl district, Greater Poland Voivodeship, i.e. in the area covered by regionalization listed in the annex to the Commission Implementing Regulation (CIR) 2021/605.
  • ASF outbreak no. 2021/35 (primary outbreak) was designated on July 27, 2021 on the farm where 26 pigs (9 weaners, 15 fattening pigs, 2 sows) were kept, located in Gierłyowo, in the Bojanowo commune, Rawicki poviat, Wielkopolskie voivodeship, i.e. in the area covered by regionalization listed in the annex to the Commission Implementing Regulation (CIR) 2021/605.
