New webinar series shows the ins and outs of small-scale pig keeping
Alberta Pork Producers, Alberta Farm Animal Care and Prairie Swine Health have launched a three-part webinar series on how to start a small-scale pig farm.The webinar series is a partnership with Alberta Pork and Prairie Swine Health and will walk through how producers can start a small-scale pig operation.
Webinar content is geared towards first time pig producers or those interested in starting small swine operations. Dr Kelsey Gray of Prairie Swine Health is hosting the webinar series. The sessions will be recorded and hosted on Zoom. A Zoom account is not required to attend this series. Registrants will also be provided with access to the session recording once the workshop has ended for up to 2 months.

Breeds, behaviours and handling - Wednesday, 1 September - 7:00 PM MST
- Breeds of pigs
- Normal pig behaviours
- Abnormal pig behaviours
- Handling and restraint
Feed, water and waste - Wednesday, 15 September - 7:00 PM MST
- How to feed your pigs - appropriate feed, feeders, and biosecurity
- Body condition scoring
- Importance of water - water quality and waterers
- Cleanliness and waste management - including rural and urban options
This webinar series is specifically meant for residents of Alberta and will contain bylaws and regulations specific to that area.
