Taiwan remains ASF-free after discovery of infected Chinese pig on 4 April

No cases of African swine fever (ASF) have been identified on Taiwan’s farms after a nation-wide inspection.

According to reporting in Taiwan News, 6,400 pig farms in Taiwan have been inspected and declared free of African swine fever. The nation-wide inspection followed the 4 April discovery of a ASF-infected pig that washed up on Taiwan’s shores from China. The pig’s body was found on the coast of New Taipei’s Walni District.

Huang Chin-cheng, deputy minister at the Council of Agriculture says that 6,400 of Taiwan’s 6,500 pig breeding units have tested negative for ASF. Results from the final 100 farms is expected later on 12 April.

Taiwan’s Coast Guard has expanded patrols and implemented stringent border checks against pork imports to prevent the virus from spreading.
