Jamaican grocers fear pork shortages over Christmas
Jamaican grocers warn that pork supplies are growing scarce in the run-up to Christmas.According to reporting in The Jamaica Gleaner, despite strong supplies of other meat, pork supplies are dwindling.
Speaking to The Gleaner, Ander Ellis of Andrew’s Meat and More said that the markets indicated a scarcity of pork.
“Based on what we are noticing, we’re going to have all the usual meats, with the exception of pork, because as things stand, pork meat is scarce,” Ellis said on 1 December.
Ellis told reporters that increased pork imports created a supply glut, prompting many pig producers to leave the business.
“While some have returned to raising pigs, the majority have stayed away, and from what I know, this is what’s causing the scarcity at this time,” Ellis said.
Last week, Jamaica’s Agriculture Minister, Floyd Green, said that the pork supply chain was being monitored alongside other key commodities.
