ISN reports that 2020 commenced with a backlog of supply from the holiday season thereby pushing market prices down for many EU members. In the past week, the German leading quotation initially fell by 9 cents with The Netherlands, Austria and Belgium following suit.

Other countries saw more significant price drops: the UK experienced a 7 cent decline, while Spain and France dropped 5 cents.

The Danish price stands out and has remained steady despite strong export commitments.

It is hoped that the backlog of supply will level out soon with the significant price reductions before demand in Asia picks up again in February.

Due to the mixed price developments early this year, the ranking of the top EU pig producing countries has changed drastically. Denmark now ranks ahead of Spain in first place.
