According to latest data from Defra, this takes year to date (January-June) pig feed production up to 872,400 tonnes, 5 per cent lower than the same period in 2016.

The decline in compound pig feed usage during the first half of the year has been largely driven by a 7 per cent (31,400 tonnes) fall on the year in finisher feed output and a 10 per cent (10,900 tonnes) drop in breeder feed production.

The reduction in finisher feed output during the first half of 2017, echoes reports that domestic pig meat supplies have been tight, with pig meat production from January-June 6 per cent lower year on year.

During the second half of the year, UK pig meat production is expected to be more stable – click here to read more.

With this in mind, GB compound pig feed production may also firm. However, this is dependent on a number of factors including feed conversion and weather during the autumn/winter.
