Morris Yoder, the owner of Soggy Bottom Farm in Weldon, Iowa, selected to use Hypor’s genetics after ending farrowing production more than one year ago due to disease challenges.

“Mr. Yoder decided to use Hypor sows because they fit well with a farrow-to-finish operation,” says Hypor Sales Representative Nathan Merchen. The Hypor Libra* sow combines milk capacity with the ability to produce uniform litters of quality pigs to increase the number of full value market hogs going to the packer.

Hypor F1 gilts were delivered to Soggy Bottom Farm at the end of March. The gilts will be bred to Hypor Magnus boars to produce market pigs. While a small proportion of the gilts will be bred to the Hypor Landrace and Hypor Large White boars to produce replacement gilts internally. The Hypor Landrace and Hypor Large White balance prolificacy, weaning capacity and stayability with carcass leanness and feed efficiency.

“By raising his own replacement gilts, Yoder can close the farm and not have to bring in any more live animals which helps biosecurity and reduces the risk of a disease outbreak,” Merchen says. "In addition, the farm is using the Hypor Magnus—a robust boar that is capable of withstanding disease and environmental challenges.

Because the farm has had experience battling disease, they were interested in using robust pigs,” Merchen explains. “We use Combined Crossbred and Purebred Selection (CCPS) in our breeding program to identify animals that will perform better under disease challenges, which makes the Hypor Magnus very durable against health challenges.” The Hypor Magnus is also the leading terminal boar in average daily gain (ADG) in North America.

A recent trial shows that the Hypor Magnus outperforms leading boars in feed efficiency at heavier weights of 285 to 300 pounds. “The Hypor Magnus and Hypor Libra* are a good fit for the North American market,” Merchen says. “Once producers try Hypor genetics—they keep using them.” Hypor is continuing to expand its presence in the 6 million-head U.S. sow herd with new customers, like Soggy Bottom Farm, and with new multiplication facilities and boar studs.
