World Pork Expo: PIC Advances Swine Nutrition with Manual, New Tools

ANALYSIS - At PIC, they are providing genetics as well as the technical expertise to producers to help realize the genetic potential at the slat level. One of those areas of technical expertise that PIC invested in during the last year is nutrition, reports Sarah Mikesell live from World Pork Expo in Des Moines, Iowa, USA.

Márcio Gonçalves, global nutrition specialist with PIC, speaks to The Pig Site's Sarah Mikesell at World Pork Expo in Des Moines, Iowa, USA.

PIC has also expanded their nutrition team in people and reach, adding three nutritionists working around the globe along side a network of nutrition consultants.

"On the nutritional side of PIC, we launched a new nutrition manual, which was based on research of over 50,000 pigs under commercial conditions, so we could translate that research for the producer in real-life," said Márcio Gonçalves, global nutrition specialist with PIC.

Also new is the PIC Lysine Economic Calculator. The team worked with nutritionists and producers to build the calculator to not only maximize performance but to also maximize profit, keeping in mind current pig prices and feed prices.

Over the last 18 months, PIC has been involved in more than 40 nutrition commercial trials. The data results will then be used to continuously update the PIC nutrition manual.

"I chose PIC because it's a very science-driven company," he said. "We use all our data and science and translate it into success, which means maximizing the profit of the producers we work with."
