The indices, released by Brazilian agricultural research organisation Embrapa, recorded falls of 2.32 per cent for pig production and 7.05 per cent for broiler production in July.

Animal feed forms a big part of production costs and there was a decrease in spending on corn and soybeans in that month, which was largely responsible for the decline in the indices.

In the case of pigs, nutrition costs fell 2.24 per cent in July from the previous month, whereas for broilers the decrease was 6.72 per cent in the same period.
