Joel Wenninghoff, swine business manager with ADM Animal Nutrition, speaks to ThePigSite's Sarah Mikesell at World Pork Expo in Des Moines, Iowa, USA.

Proplex DY is a yeast based, high protein ingredient primarily for starter pigs weighing less than 25 pounds.

Proplex DY Ration"We're excited that we've had an opportunity to visit with producers on how our new ingredient might fit in with their products, and we're also excited that we've adapted it in our commercial line of feeds," said Joel Wenninghoff, swine business manager with ADM Animal Nutrition. "Our Motivate Starter Programs were developed about a year and a half ago. Proplex DY is going to be incorporated into those as a really nice addition relative to improving a return on investment for the customers."

In pig starter diets, producers often limit the amount of soybean meal because of the anti-nutritional factors involved, he said. As a result, more expensive protein ingredients are needed, such as fish meal, processed proteins, soy protein concentrate or blood products.

"What [Proplex DY] does is, it gives us a really nice amino acid profile. It has no anti-nutritional factors, so it allows us to lower the soybean meal in those diets," he said. "It also allows us to replace some of those more expensive protein sources in those diets."

It also can help "stage-up" that young pig's nutritional program.

A recent ADM Animal Nutrition study found nursery pigs fed Proplex DY in place of fish meal and other protein ingredients at an eight percent inclusion rate during the first six weeks post weaning responded with three percent better feed efficiency.

"We see more and more of a demand in the industry relative to limiting some of the meat products. We have some different meat and antibiotic free programs, and it really fits for those customers who are looking for that opportunity," he said. "It's a very cost effective solution."

Proplex DY was developed to fill a need for a quality protein source with low anti-nutritional properties to help nutrient absorption and animal growth. Produced from the wet corn milling process, Proplex DY is composed of dried Saccharomyces yeast (non-active yeast), a source of highly digestible amino acids that yield economic and nutritional benefits to swine, poultry and aquaculture diets.
