This transboundary animal disease (TAD) can have a very negative impact on a nation’s economy and social structures. In recent years, the international community, national authorities, the pig production sector and researchers have been trying to solve the problem posed by ASF in a sustainable way in order to eliminate constraints on pig production and enhance rural development.

The African Union’s Interafrican Bureau for Animal Resources(AU-IBAR), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Livestock Research Institute(ILRI) have jointly developed a regional strategy to control ASF in infected countries and to prevent its spread to non-infected ones.

The strategy is based on collaboration and partnerships among farmers, traders, veterinary and animal production services, researchers, governments, civil society and development partners. The strategy is also translated into an action plan and a control program is being developed.

The objective of the webinar will be to:

  • Sensitize the international community on the heaven burden of ASF in Africa;
  • Create awareness among the scientific and donor community on the strategy;
  • Gather inputs/suggestions to improve the strategy;
  • Attract possible donors for funding the control program.

Guest speakers will include Professor Mary Louise Penrith (University of Pretoria), Dr Hiver Boussini (AU-IBAR), Dr Edward Okoth (ILRI) and Dr Eran Raizman (FAO) who will act as moderator.

The webinar, kindly supported by the European Commission for the Control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (EuFMD), will take place on 15 June at 15:00 EAT (Eastern Africa Time) UTC/GMT +3 hours.
