Foot and Mouth Disease Moves Across China
CHINA – Over 300 Chinese pigs have died from foot and mouth disease (FMD) some 3,000km from the initial source.China’s foot and mouth disease strain has been confirmed in Anhui, some 3,000 kilometres from its Tibetan source on the eastern side of the country.
The outbreak, reported on 6 January, involves a pig farm near the city of Maanshan, where 926 animals were culled out after mortalities, reports the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
Studies at the Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute confirmed it as serotype A, the scourge of many herds across the southern regions of Tibet and Yunnan.
National vaccination responses have so far treated over 181,000 cattle and sheep within Tibet and Yunnan.
Original notification came early in July 2013 when cattle, pigs and sheep were destroyed in a Yunnan village.
