New GM Soy Soon to be Approved in EU
EU - The European Union is expected to approve a new GM soybean for import after the customary split vote among member countries this week.

By: The Commission will be empowered to green-light the variety if member countries repeat their "no opinion" vote at an appeals committee in the New Year (which they will).
In the pro-GM camp are United Kingdom, Belgium, Spain, Romania, Ireland, Estonia, Finland, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Netherlands and Denmark.
Anti-GM are Austria, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Luxembourg, France, Cyprus, Hungary, Malta, Slovenia, and Greece. And Italy, Germany, and Sweden can't make their minds up (they abstained from voting).
The import of the herbicide-tolerant GM variety that produces the omega-3-fatty acid stearidonic acid is mainly destined for animal feed and processing.
There are eight other GM varieties in the pipeline, all awaiting import approval into a European Union that still cannot decide whether GMs are a good thing, or the work of the devil.
