PED-Positive Farm Samples in US: 8,898

US - The total number of pig farm samples that have tested positive for the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) virus now stands at 8,898 in 32 states, writes Jackie Linden. There were 71 new positive samples in the most recent week reported.

The National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) reports reports 71 positive accessions out of 593 tested at nine veterinary diagnostic labs for the week ending 8 November 2014, according to the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV).

The report notes that PDCoV testing data from Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory was not available for inclusion in this weekly report; ISU data will be added in next week’s report.

The total number of states reporting one or more PED-positive cases now stands at 32. Nevada is the state most recently reporting PED for the first time in early October 2014.

Pig Farm Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 8,898

The total number of pig farm samples (termed 'laboratory biological accessions' in the official report) that have tested positive for the PED virus (PEDv) since April 2013 now stands at 8,898, which includes 71 for the most recent week.

For the month of October, 3,353 accessions were tested, of which 292 samples or 8.7 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

For the current month to date, 654 accessions have been tested, of which 81 samples or 12.4 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 37,966 farm samples have been tested, of which 21 per cent have tested positive for the virus.

Results by age class

Suckling pigs

For the month of October, 343 farms were tested, of which 44 samples or 13 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the current month to date, 30 farms have been tested, of which five samples or 17 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 4,983 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,908 samples or 34 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Nursery pigs

For the month of October, 504 farms were tested, of which 43 samples or 8.5 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the current month to date, 68 farms have been tested, of which 10 samples or 15 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 5,572 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,556 samples or 25 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Grower/finisher pigs

For the month of October, 627 farms were tested, of which 48 samples or 7.7 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the current month to date, 123 farms have been tested, of which 26 samples or 21 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 6,595 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,537 samples or 19 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Sows and boars

For the month of October, 244 farms were tested, of which seven samples or 2.9 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the current month to date, 26 farms have been tested, of which three samples or 12 per cent have tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 3,157 farm samples have been tested, of which 682 samples or 16 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Unknown age class

For the month of October, 1,765 farms were tested, of which 161 samples or 9.1 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the current month to date, 416 farms have been tested, of which 37 samples or 8.9 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 19,048 farm samples have been tested, of which 3,439 samples or 17 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Results by state

According to AASV, the total number of states with one or more positive results, according to the official report, now stands at 32.

The total number of positive accessions on this report (up to the week of 2 November) is 8,898, 71 more than the previous week.

Those states with 200 or more positive tests are: Iowa, 2,398; Minnesota, 1,454; Illinois, 1,002; North Carolina, 853; Oklahoma, 463; Indiana, 451; Ohio, 372; Missouri, 352; Kansas, 297, Michigan, 237 and Nebraska, 211.

For the most recent week (week of 2 November), the state reporting the most new positive tests was Texas with 13, followed by Iowa with 11 and Missouri with 10.

Also reporting one or more positive results were Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Utah, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Pig Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 34,116

The total number of swine samples (termed 'biological samples' in the official report) since testing began in June 2013 now stands at 34,116.

For the month of October, 19,671 samples were tested, of which 1,207 samples or 6.1 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

For the current month to date, 2,965 samples have been tested, of which 287 samples or 9.7 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 218,673 samples have been tested, of which 14 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Environmental Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 7,268

The total number of environmental samples testing positive since testing began in June 2013 now stands at 7,268.

For the month of October, 1,747 samples were tested, of which 88 samples or 5.0 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

For the current month to date, 142 samples have been tested, of which 13 samples or 9.2 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 36,643 samples have been tested, of which 18 per cent tested positive.
