Report Examines Transmission of Flu Viruses from Animals to Man
EU - The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has examined the transmission of influenza viruses from animals to humans. The final report of the EFSA’s FLURISK project was published last week. It proposes a tool to rank animal influenza strains according to their potential to infect humans.
Influenza viruses circulating in animals pose a public health risk as they can develop the ability to infect humans. Moreover, if viruses acquire the ability to spread easily from person to person, they can cause a pandemic.
FLURISK brings together internationally recognised research institutes and reference laboratories, international agencies and universities from veterinary and human medicine areas across the European Union.
