The idea for the fence came as a way to prevent the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF), which is carried by wild boar which are able to roam freely between the two countries.

At an international conference in Vilnius, Lithuania, representatives of the International Epizootic Bureau criticized the idea proposed by the Lithuanian Food and Veterinary Service, stating it is not feasible, reports BBN.
