Industry Association Warns Against Swill Feeding
UK - Britain's pig farmers are concerned that the current Pig Idea campaign for a return to swill-feeding — including the cannibalistic feeding of pork to pigs — could be sending confusing signals to pig-keepers.The National Pig Association (NPA) is soon to launch a campaign against the feeding of kitchen waste, including vegetables, will point pig-keepers to a new 'Why feeding kitchen waste is illegal' web page, which explains why everyone should follow the law to the letter.
NPA warns that:
- The risk of foot-and-mouth and classical swine fever entering this country is always present and these diseases have the potential to cause considerable economic damage to the nation as a whole and to countryside communities in particular.
- Now there is a new danger - African swine fever - which recently arrived at the borders of the European Union.
- These diseases can live for months, sometimes years, in meat.
It urges all pig-keepers, but particularly hobby-keepers who may not be as familiar with the law as professional pig producers, to:
- Never feed your pigs kitchen waste, including vegetables — even if you live in a non-meat-eating household.
- Obey the law scrupulously, even if you think your own kitchen waste is safe — make sure you are not the person who is responsible for a new epidemic.
NPA considers the majority of pig-keepers are keen to act responsibly and will therefore appreciate an explanation of why it is important to obey the ban on feeding kitchen waste.
