Brazilian Pork Output Increased in 2012

BRAZIL – Data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography has confirmed a record breaking 2012 for cattle slaughter as well as growth in the pig sector.

Domestic and export markets have been driving slaughterhouse output.

Last year slaughter figures grew by 8 per cent year-on-year reaching an excess of 31.1 million head. This broke the previous 2007 record of 30.7 million.

From 2005 pig slaughter has been increases annually and grew 3.2 per cent last year to reach 35.98 million totalling a weight of 3.465 million tons- 2.8 per cent up on 2011.

Milk output also increased to 22.338 billion litres (+2.8 per cent).

According to the coordinator of Strategic Planning of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock andSupply, José Garcia Gasques these results highlight the strong dynamism of livestock in 2012, driven by growth in both domestic market and exports.
