EU Pig Prices: Stabilising on the Level Reached

EU - This week, the situation appears in a mostly balanced way on the EU slaughter markets.

In southern Europe, the demand remains brisk on the part of the slaughter companies. The weather, being slightly cooler at the moment, means the pigs reach the necessary slaughter weight within a shorter period of time again.

So this week, no new price increases could be realised. In mid- and western Europe, the supply also falls clearly below the previous year’s quantities. What’s on offer is presently being swiftly asked for on the part of the slaughter companies. The good demand must, above all, be attributed to the high demand for processed meat such as belly and bacon.

A +3 cents’ price increase was reported from Denmark, mainly due to a good demand in the meat business, mostly in selling belly. From the Danish farmers’ point of view, such a price increase was long overdue. After all, the Danish quotation was outrun over the past weeks by other large exporting nations’ quotations, such as the Spanish and the German ones.

Trend for the German market: The quantities of pigs for slaughter on offer are scarce and so are expected to be the price-setting factor next week.

Currently, a backward development by the slaughter companies cannot be recognised. For instance, a batch was sold at a record price of 1.98 euros per kg on the ISN internet pig exchange last Friday. From today’s point of view, the prices are expected to remain at least steady for the week to come.
