The programme, known as the National Agriculture Manure Management Program (NAMMP), was jointly developed and supported by the intensive livestock rural Research and Development Corporations (RDCs). These included Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), Australian Egg Corporation (AECL), Chicken Meat Council (RIRDC) and Dairy Australia (DA).

The bid worth a total of $6.19 million includes $2.97 million funding from the Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) under the Australian Government’s Carbon Farming Futures programme, ‘Filling the Research Gap’.

APL General Manager Research and Innovation, Dr Darryl D’Souza, said: “The programmes focuses on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) mitigation from alternative and improved manure management systems and lays down the foundations to further develop Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) methodologies and subsequent carbon credit opportunities for intensive livestock producers“.

“This new funding will certainly enable intensive industries to fast track development of new CFI methodologies which will lead to better mitigation of GHG emissions. This is a great achievement collectively for the intensive livestock industries,“ Dr D’Souza said.

The projects funded under this programme include:

• Coordination of the NAMMP (APL);
• Mitigating the GHG potential of Australian soils amended with livestock manure (Dr Sasha Jenkins, University of WA);
• Advancing livestock wastes as low emission-high efficiency fertiliser (Dr Matthew Redding, DPI QLD);
• Pork GHG mitigation (Eugene McGahan, FSA Consulting); and
• Poultry GHG mitigation (Stephen Wiedemann, FSA Consulting).
