Prosperm® helps to maximise both semen output and the quality of individual sperm. A recent new source of this powder has being found, which supplies even more benefits to the customer than the previous pellet form.

Thoroughly researched and successfully used to enhance the performance of the renowned JSR stud boars, this convenient daily supplement contains Hi-DHA oil, Selenium and Vitamin E. Prosperm can be recommended to your customers as a quick and totally natural means of improving their herd's productivity.

Why is Prosperm necessary?

The fat composition of boar semen suggests a potential lack of 22:6n3 fats when compared to that of other mammals. Whilst ram semen has 61.4 per cent of 22:6n3 fat, and bull semen 55.4 per cent, that of boars has just 32.7 per cent.

Commercial pellets are extremely unbalanced in terms of their ratio of n-6 to n-3 fats, so do little to redress this imbalance. Prosperm is a convenient way of re-balancing these fats and, at the same time, adding other beneficial antioxidants.

The proven benefits of feeding Prosperm

Supplementing boar feed with Prosperm augments the polyunsaturated fatty acid composition of boar spermatozoa.

The proportion of docosahexaenoic (DHA) in the spermatozoal membranes can be increased from 31 per cent to 45 per cent. This has a beneficial effect on the development of spermatozoa during spermatogenesis, influencing key physiological and metabolic features. As a result their reproductive function is enhanced.

More sperm per ejaculate

Increasing the levels of long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (DHA) available in boar's feed also promotes spermatogenesis resulting in a dramatic increase in total sperm numbers. Trials have shown increases of up to 53 billion and an increase in ejaculate concentration levels of up to 15 per cent.

More inseminations per collection

This increase in ejaculate concentration raises the number of inseminations that can be made per collection, with trials showing that feeding the equivalent of 100g of Prosperm powder per day can generate an extra 652 bottles per boar per year. The cost per boar per year for Prosperm would be 3365, while the extra doses would net you 32282 in savings.

Enhanced sperm viability

Feeding Prosperm also enhances the quality of sperm produced. Polyunsaturated fatty acids, concentrated in the head and tail membrane regions of the spermatozoa, play an important role in their overall capability and interaction with the uterine surface environment. In trials sperm produced after feeding Prosperm demonstrated:

  • 12.7 per cent increase in viability
  • 20.4 per cent increase in cells with normal acrosomes
  • 57 per cent decrease in total malformation
  • Increased motility
  • Increased survivability in storage

The improvement in sperm viability and function offers significant reproductive benefits. Trials have shown, feeding boars with Prosperm resulted in improved conception rates, with increases of up to 7.8 per cent and an average of 5.6 per cent. Based on current market prices, this offers your customers an average improvement in profit of 33,300 per year.

On average four per cent more pigs born alive

Prosperm also improves the consistency of sperm production throughout the year. This leads to a more consistent farrowing pattern and an increase in pigs born alive per litter. For the average UK herd of 574 sows producing 11.5 born alive per litter, the increase of 0.46 pigs per litter offers a significant profit increase of 318,613 per year.
