Boar Stimulation

UK - Boars have a marked stimulating effect on sows and gilts at point of service, causing increased production of the hormone oxytocin which aids semen transport within the uterus, according to ACMC.

However, this effect is relatively short-lived and after stimulation sows will become refractory again for a period, says Paul Thompson, veterinary consultant to pig-breeding company, ACMC.

He therefore advises that, for optimum results, producers should organise their work so that once stimulated by the boar all the stimulated sows can be served within a 20-minute period.
