Nominate a Pig Industry Star

UK - The pig industry is awash with people always willing to go that extra mile to help and for more than 50 years, the industry has been acknowledging them.

The annual David Black Award, sponsored by BPEX, was instituted back in 1960 to go to somebody who has made an important and sustained contribution to the industry.

Previous winners have come from all parts of the industry including producers, processors, academics and the allied industry.

Previous winner Richard Longthorp, now chairman of the NPA, said: “When I won I was firmly of the opinion there were others out there more deserving than me.

“That must mean there are still plenty of people who perhaps themselves are not aware of just how much they have done for the industry.

“So it is clearly down to their contemporaries in the industry to recognise what those individuals might not recognise themselves and nominate them.“

BPEX Director Mick Sloyan said: “I would encourage everybody in the industry to think about who they would nominate as there are so many excellent candidates out there.

“It is the industry’s most prestigious award and in the past has always gone to a very deserving recipient, even though the winners sometimes didn’t think so as they were often quite modest about their achievements.“
