EU Pig Prices: Uncertainty in Slaughter Markets

EU - On almost all European markets, the quotations went down considerably at the turn of the year this week. The German quotation is the unfortunate leader with an eight-cent downward correction.

As a result of a few large slaughter companies’ house-price policy, a strong feeling of uncertainty spread on the slaughter pig market over the past week.

With a 7- and 6-cents’ fall in prices, the Netherlands, Belgium and Austria also faced a severe price concession. In Italy, the prices went down by 5 cents, in Spain by 2 cents.

Even in France, the extensive quantities on offer meet moderate demand. Compared with the previous week’s prices, the quotation went down by 4 cents there.

After the Danish price had been reduced by 5 cents last week, it is being cut by another 3 cents this week. Thus, the Danish price over the past two weeks went down by 8 cents like the German quotation did. Yet, the Danish quotation overlies the German one by 14 cents.

Trend for the German market: It appears in outlines that despite the extensive quantities of pigs mature for slaughter on offer will not result in backlog supply worth mentioning over the holidays. The slaughter companies process the meat they ordered, making advantage of the price drop for replenishing their cold storage.

This week, no new quotation will be published by the producers, so the current price will be valid until 5 January 2012. The next internet pig exchange as well will be held only on 4 January 2012.
