Litter weight is the defining factor for lactation production. The heavier the litter the more milk the sow produces. This requires the sow to increase her feed intake or use more body reserves.

A more balanced breeding programme results in stronger piglets and decreased piglet mortality. Such piglets become better finishers with an improved quality at slaughter. They are healthier, less time is needed per pig and the feed conversion improves. Finally, such a breeding programme results in increased sow longevity.

TOPIGS will implement these findings in its breeding programme.
