Commercial Red Meat Production Down in April

US - Commercial red meat production for the United States totalled 3.87 billion pounds in April, down four per cent from the 4.01 billion pounds produced in April 2010, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).

Beef production, at 2.05 billion pounds, was 4 per cent below the previous year. Cattle slaughter totaled 2.72 million head, down four per cent from April 2010. The average live weight was up four pounds from the previous year, at 1,257 pounds.

Veal production totalled 10.2 million pounds, eight per cent below April a year ago. Calf slaughter totalled 58,900 head, down 14 per cent from April 2010. The average live weight was up 21 pounds from last year, at 296 pounds.

Pork production totalled 1.79 billion pounds, down three per cent from the previous year. Hog slaughter totalled 8.63 million head, down five per cent from April 2010. The average live weight was up four pounds from the previous year, at 277 pounds.

January to April 2011 commercial red meat production was 16.1 billion pounds, up one per cent from 2010. Accumulated beef production was up one per cent from last year, veal was down four per cent and pork was up one per cent from last year.

April 2010 contained 22 weekdays (no holidays) and four Saturdays, while April 2011 contained 21 weekdays (no holidays) and five Saturdays.
