May Red Meat Production Below Last Year

US - Commercial red meat production for the United States totalled 3.73 billion pounds in May, down five per cent from the 3.92 billion pounds produced in May 2009, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) in their Livestock Slaughter report.

Pork production totalled 1.62 billion pounds, down six per cent from the previous year.

Hog kill totalled 7.97 million head, down six per cent from May 2009.

The average live weight was up one pound from the previous year, at 272 pounds.

January to May 2010 commercial red meat production was 19.7 billion pounds, down two per cent from 2009.

Accumulated pork production was down four per cent from last year.

Both May 2009 and May 2010 contained 21 weekdays (including one holiday) and five Saturdays.
