Pig Disease Monitoring Put to the Test
AUSTRALIA - The ability of authorities to trace the movements of a pig carrying an exotic disease have just been put to the test.A number of pigs were traced through saleyards and abattoirs back to their property of birth as part of a national exercise, reports ABC.
Authorities say it was essential to test the system, before it has to be used in a real disease situation.
Steve Eastwood, from the NSW Livestock Health and Pest Authorities, says the exercise was designed to test each state.
"We managed to identify the targeted animals and also their mates within the given time," he says.
"[The exercise] has actually identified improvements.
"The final report hasn't been released yet. It'll be put out by Animal Health Australia."
