According to 24, the main reason for the export cutdowns are rise in pigstry, closure of numerous pig-breeding farms and destructive earthquakes in the Sichuan province – the biggest Chinese pig-breeding area - in May 2008.

In January-August 2008 China sold 50,000 tons of pork abroad, whereof 4,800 tons was sold to Kyrgyzstan, 20 percent less than for the same period last year.
