Feed prices worry pork producers

AUSTRALIA - Soaring feed prices are forcing Queensland pork producers to consider their options.

The summer crop outlook in parts of the state has improved due to recent rain, but pork producers say they are battling the rising costs and competition from imports.

Paul Taylor, from the central Burnett region, says some producers are planning to get out, although that takes time.

"It's a gradual process, if you decided to do it you would stop mating today and in just over four months time the last of those matings would farrow so then you've got to grow them through to market which is another 20 to 22 weeks," he said.
