Ontario Hog Market-Weight Range Increases

ONTARIO - Effective October 2, 2006, the Ontario hog market-weight range will be 125 lbs - 325 lbs (56 kg – 148 kg). This is expanded from 125 lbs - 300 lbs (56 kg – 136 kg). The change is responding to higher hog market-weights and evolving processor requirements.

“Over the last two decades, average hog weights processed by Canadian packing plants have increased by 36 lbs,” says Curtiss Littlejohn, Ontario Pork Chair. “In the past six months, many processors in Ontario and Quebec have introduced new grading grids with higher weight ranges, and this trend is expected to continue.”

Ontario Pork will be collecting a service fee of $1.75 per market-weight hog of 125 lbs - 325 lbs, effective October 2, 2006.

The service fee is paid on all market hogs in Ontario to cover the central functions and activities of Ontario Pork. This responsible regulatory marketing system provides research and development into Ontario's hog industry and builds a united front for pork producers.

Under the Farm Products Marketing Act, Ontario Pork has the sole authority to sell market-weight hogs in Ontario.
