Though the epidemic was previously known to spread only among animals, Vietnamese authorities warned humans were also at risk if they came in direct contact with sick animals.

Deputy Health Minister Trinh Quan Huan told provincial authorities to implement urgent measures like stocking vaccines and spraying chemicals to prevent human infection.

It had first emerged in 17 provinces and cities Tuesday and after it spread further by Thursday, over 10,000 cattle and 12,000 pigs were discovered infected.
