Market analysis

As piglets are prone to diseases of the respiratory and digestive systems under low temperature conditions, farmers in northern China had held back on plans to replenish stocks.

Piglet prices in the provinces of Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu and Henan were unchanged on lacklustre buying.

In the Guangdong province and Guangxi Zhuang Region, piglet prices were higher on increased demand and were also boosted by hog price recovery lately. Fewer piglet deliveries from the north had also sent prices higher.

Market forecast

Cold weather in northern China is likely to affect cross province deliveries and prevent piglet prices from rising significantly. In the south, piglet prices are expected to make marginal gains as the Spring Festival draws near.
