CCI: Farmers tired of paying to promote factory farms
IOWA - The Supreme Court heard arguments challenging the constitutionality of the mandatory beef checkoff program Wednesday.
The decision, expected in the spring of 2005, will likely determine the fate of the mandatory pork checkoff, which is also being challenged in court. Opponents say the programs, which require producers to contribute to a fund used to promote their respective products, violate the constitutional right to Freedom of Speech.
