KANSAS CITY - Smithfield Foods Inc. SFD.N has been buying up debt from creditors of bankrupt Farmland Industries Inc. in a strategy aimed at acquiring the farm cooperative's meat assets, according to documents filed in the Farmland bankruptcy case.
