Stress is created whenever the sow has to respond to a noxious stimuli. Thus anything that causes fear or discomfort (a negative response) causes the adrenal gland to produce hormones called corticosteroids which depress the normal protective or immune mechanisms so that the animal becomes more susceptible to disease.
