Borna disease, is caused by a virus which damages the nervous system. It has been known in horses in Germany and surrounding countries for over a century. It has also been diagnosed in sheep and more recently in cats. It causes concern from time to time because there is evidence that it may pass to people working with these animals and cause dementia. However, it has never been reported in pigs.
