WHO expert visits Mauritius over outbreak of African swine fever
MAURITIUS - The Deputy Head of the Department of Regional Affairs of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr Gaston Funes arrived in Mauritius on Tuesday following the outbreak of African swine fever in some farms that would lead to the culling of infected animals.
An official of the Ministry of Agro-Industry said Funes would assess the epidemic before holding working sessions with veterinary officials as well as officials of the Ministry of Agro-Industry, Fisheries and the private sector.
He will also discuss control measures to cull the infected animals and how to dispose of the carcasses.
Funes is expected to make recommendations to boost the production of pigs in Mauritius, while implementing plans to prevent the re-introduction of the disease into the country.
