Illegal Imports Cause Foot-and-Mouth Epidemic in Vietnam
VIETNAM - Foot-and-mouth disease is raging in Vietnam due to the increasing illegal import of cattle into the country, said a conference in central Khanh Hoa province Tuesday.
It said the unregulated import of buffaloes, cows and pigs were mainly to blame for the outbreak in 17 provinces and cities including Hanoi so far.
The import is covert, and on the rise in Quang Ninh, Cao Bang, Ha Giang, and Lao Cai provinces in the northeast region; Long An, An Giang, Kien Giang provinces in the southern Mekong River Delta; Nghe An, Ha Tinh provinces in the north central region.
The conference was organized by the agriculture ministry’s Animal Health Department in Nha Trang capital city.
